It is confirmed: from July 1, 2024, pharmacies in Cameroon will only accept prescriptions issued by doctors duly registered with the National Order of Doctors of Cameroon (NODC). This new measure, decided on May 6, 2024, during a meeting between the president of the NODC, Dr. Rodolphe Fonkua, and the Minister of Health, Manaouda Malachie, marks a decisive turning point for the Cameroonian healthcare system. This measure aims to ensure better health security for all citizens.

Objectives of the Measure

Traceability of Prescriptions

The implementation of this measure aims to ensure that every medication dispensed in a pharmacy comes from an authenticated prescription, thus allowing the entire care process to be tracked and holding healthcare professionals accountable.

Combating Illegal Medical Practice

By restricting prescriptions to doctors registered with the NODC, the government seeks to eradicate illegal practices and protect patients from the dangers of unauthorized prescriptions.

Improving the Quality of Care

This measure reinforces the validity criteria for prescriptions, ensuring that prescribed treatments are appropriate and comply with current medical standards.

Requirements for Prescriptions Starting July 1, 2024

From this date, each prescription must include:

- The name of the healthcare facility: The name of the hospital, clinic, or medical office.

- The full name of the doctor: The complete identity of the prescribing doctor.

- The doctor's specialty: The indication of the practitioner's medical specialty.

- The doctor's full address: The complete contact details of the place of practice.

- A nominative stamp and the ONMC registration number: A stamp bearing the doctor's name and their registration number with the National Order of Doctors of Cameroon.

What This Means for Cameroonians

For patients, this new regulation means they must ensure that their prescriptions meet the established criteria. Pharmacists, on the other hand, will need to be vigilant and refuse any non-compliant prescription. This increased responsibility aims to strengthen their role in the care chain and ensure patient safety.
